CANADIAN INDUSTRY ONLINE - DECEMBER 2015Valelife in classrooms across Canada. With Vale’s support, we have sparked inter- est in Earth science learning in people of all ages.”Mayor of Sudbury Brian Bigger commented to CIO on Vale’s inclusion in the Sudbury community: “We’re ex- cited because the Totten mine will have a lifespan of about 20 years and will em- ploy people locally. It’s wonderful that these projects in Sudbury have such an extended lifespan and will contribute for the long term. And the proportion of mining service and supply compa- nies that have sprung up in Sudbury has increased dramatically because of local mining projects.”Vale has not only grown the lo- cal economy over the past 100 years, but has become an intrinsic part of the scienti c community. SNOLAB is a world-class science facility located deep underground in Vale’s Sudbury mine. The combination of great depthand cleanliness that SNOLAB affords allows extremely rare interactions and weak processes to be studied, which is an important part of the science that oc- curs at the facility. Currently, the science programme at SNOLAB is focussed on sub-atomic physics, largely neutrino and dark matter physics. According to SNOLAB, the facility “seeks to en- able, spearhead, catalyze and promote underground science, whilst inspiring both the public and future profession- als in the eld.”Clearly, Vale has entrenched itself in Sudbury and the surrounding re- gions, and will contribute to the com- munity for decades to come.OTHER CANADIAN OPERATIONSVale’s Canadian operations span the country, and the company has a hug presence in Eastern Canada.
