What are the key elements of the
projects’ communications plan?
MTO:
Key elements in the com-
munications plan stemmed from the
need to cover all types of public out-
reach during the environmental assess-
ment studies through to completion of
construction.
Initially, the communications in-
volved public open houses, targeted
neighbourhood meetings, mail drops,
email communications, media inter-
views, attendance at municipal meet-
ings (including council presentations),
and one-on-one conversations with
local residents/businesses.
As the project progressed, com-
munications branched out to include
social media (Facebook, Twitter, You-
Tube, Flickr, LinkedIn, and Pinterest),
press conferences, elected officials pho-
to opportunities, and a new website. A
community newsletter was launched
in 2010 and is now delivered bi-month-
ly to over 3000 locations through the
corridor and in Windsor-Essex.
Traffic and construction impacts
communications is conducted through
social media but also traditional me-
dia through public notices, mail drops,
postings on the project website, and
changeable message signs in advance
of the construction zone.
Through all of our communica-
tions outreach, we have continued to
look for ways to not only improve our
communication, but also reach out to
different individuals in various types
of methods as the project impacts local
residents, international travellers, and
businesses. In many cases, individuals
may not always have access to a com-
puter or the internet which has meant
a focus on non-traditional outreach
opportunities to share information and
get important messages out.
What is the stakeholder consul-
tation process?
MTO:
Community input is key
to understanding the community and
environmental impacts of this project
so that we can minimize them wher-
ever possible. This input has helped to
identify the concerns that were consid-
ered in the development of the Park-
way and specific mitigation measures.
An unprecedented amount of
community and stakeholder consulta
