CANADIAN INDUSTRY ONLINE - DECEMBER 2015ANBLNEW BRUNSWICK LIQUOR CORPORATION: A TOAST TO 40 YEARS IN OPERATIONTHE NEW BRUNSWICK Liquor Corporation (ANBL, or NB Li- quor), is a provincially owned corpora-tion heading up the purchase, import, distribution and retail activity for New Brunswick. Started in 1976, the organi- zation was created from legislation in the separation of the sales of liquor in the province and licensing/control functions. According to ANBL histori- cal documents, when the enterprise was created enforcement of the Liquor Con- trol Act remained with the Department of Finance through the Liquor Licens- ing Board, but then the board was dis- banded and those functions relocated to the Public Safety Department.Alcool NB Liquor (ANBL) is di- rected by an eight member Board of Directors; seven are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, and the eighth is the CEO. ANBL contrib- utes more than $164 million to the province’s general fund, which is com- prised of over $2.2 million in collections for the Environmental Trust Fund, and over $289,000 in real property taxes. The ANBL head of ce is in Frederic- ton and operations span New Bruns- wick, with ANBL expecting signi cant growth in the next few years. ANBL hasover 2,100 products in store and those include wines, spirits, beers and other products—these product choices are managed by category managers within ANBL.The organization services the New Brunswick public via 44 corporate retail stores and 82 private agency store out- lets. CIO had the opportunity to con- nect with Brian Harriman, President and CEO of ANBL, to talk about the corporation’s past, present, and future strategy when it comes to products, people, and new store projects. What would you say is the vision ANBL has for the next stage of growth, after being of cially in business for 40 years? Our overall vision is to be the pre- ferred liquor retailer for New Bruns- wick. We want to be a strong retailer for our customers, in that we are chosen not because we’re a monopoly but be- cause we’re delivering great products, promotions, and great services. How is ANBL transforming itself to remain competitive and accessible for customers? We think that ANBL should be more than a place to buy, it should be a place to shop. That’s why we’re mov- ing towards concept stores: two have opened this year and there are anoth- er six under construction as we speak.8 | Canadian Industry Online | December, 2016
