Vale’s Long Harbour processing plant, (which is currently under devel- opment) will work in partnership with the Voisey’s Bay operation to produce high-purity electronickel. The company also has a corporate of ce in St. John’s and Vale’s global base metals headquar- ters is in Toronto. In addition: “Known as “The Hub of the North,” Thompson is home to our Manitoba operations, and is named after the chairman of In- ternational Nickel,” Vale says. The com- pany’s Port Colborne, Ontario location is home to a re nery and research sta- tion on the shores of Lake Erie.Vale began an expansion project at Voisey’s Bay with the approval of a new development of the underground deposits there, in July 2015. AccordingApril, 2016to Vale the expansion “will focus on the development of two separate deposits, Reid Brook and Eastern Deeps. Once in operation, underground mining will extend the life of the Voisey’s Bay op- eration until at least 2032 [from 2021]. At peak production the underground mines will produce about 40,000 tonnes per year of nickel-in-concentrate which will be shipped to Vale’s processing fa- cility in Long Harbour, Newfoundland for further processing into  nished nickel.” Construction begins this year.Vale reports that an “additional 400 full-time positions will be created at Voisey’s Bay to support the under- ground operations and expanded site services.
